Bringing Reformed Church Leaders Together

The World Communion of Reformed Churches - a plan for a historic union between the Reformed Ecumenical Council and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches

Two international Reformed families of churches have agreed to form a new international communion of churches. Each organization will formally dissolve and their members will together form the new body. This remarkable move came from a series of decisions by each body.

While many details remain to be worked out, the two bodies have agreed on the following:

  • The name will be World Communion of Reformed Churches
  • The Uniting General Council will take place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, June 18-28, 2010 at the campus of Calvin College. For people who know they will participate, Registration forms are available in English, Spanish, French and German.
  • A joint committee composed of four from each body will prepare the transition, including a constitution, articles of union, programming, financial transitions and staff transition.
  • The two bodies met at the Executive level in October 2008, and will meet in full Executive session in May 2009 for final preparations for union.
  • Invitations to the meeting have been sent, and member churches are invited to nominate delegates before October 31, 2008. See a complete list of dates and deadlines.
  • The North American members of both organizations have agreed to form a North American Arrangements Committee to host this historic gathering.
  • The Executive Committees approved a draft constitution in October 2008, which has been sent to member churches.
