Bringing Reformed Church Leaders Together

Presbyterian Church of India

The Presbyterian Church of India (PCI) was founded in 1841. It is the fruit of the missionary labor of the Presbyterian Church of Wales, earlier known as the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church. The Welsh Church began its missionary work in the Khasi Jaintia Hills area in 1841. In 1926, the highest Church body called "the Synod" of the Presbyterian Church was constituted. In 1953 the Synod was renamed the Assembly, and again in 2002 the Assembly was renamed the "General Assembly of the PCI."

The PCI has 2,456 congregations and 649 unorganized churches and preaching stations. The 659 pastors and 123 candidates and 3 evangelists serve some 1,394,609 members. The General Assembly meets every two years and the Executive Committee meets every six months. The church has eight regional synods of a wide range of sizes (from 790,000 down to 9,000).

The PCI subscribes to the Westminster Confession, and has close relations with the Presbyterian Church of Wales, Presbyterian Church in USA, Presbyterian Church of Korea, Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, the Protestant Church in The Netherlands, and the Uniting Church in Australia.

The PCI also belongs to the Council for World Mission, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC), Christian Conference of Asia, and the National Council of Churches in India.

In the year 1906 there was a great revival in the Presbyterian Church. In commemoration of this revival, the General Assembly celebrated the centenary in 2006 at the Mairang local church.

The PCI serves its community with medical missions, rehabilitation centers, schools and orphanages.
