Bringing Reformed Church Leaders Together

Indonesian Christian Church (GKI)
(Gereja Kristen Indonesia)

The involvement of the Indonesian Christian Church in the REC started when the Indonesian Christian Church of Central Java (established in 1945) joined the REC in 1949. Through a unification process started already in 1962, the Indonesian Christian Church of Central Java unified with the Indonesian Christian Church of West Java (established in 1940) and the Indonesian Christian Church of East Java (established in 1934) in 1988. All the churches were founded among the Chinese immigrants (Ho Kien, Hok Chia and Khe Ren) in Indonesia. After the full unification, the church is now known as the Indonesian Christian Church (Gereja Kristen Indonesia, GKI) and it has become a multi-ethnic church. In the REC Assembly in Utrecht in 2005, the REC accepted the GKI as a member of the REC succeeding the Indonesian Christian Church of Central Java.

GKI has 215 congregations with the total membership of slightly over 206.000 people. Besides, there are 38 emerging congregations and 76 preaching stations. With the presbyterial-synodal system, the congregations are organized into 18 presbyteries and the presbyteries are organized further into 3 regional synods. The Synod Assembly of GKI is held quadrennially. The whole church is now served by 293 ordained ministers (75 are female) and 37 candidate ministers (11 female).

In line with the reformed heritage, GKI has adopted the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed and the Heidelberg Catechism as its confessions of faith and doctrinal standards.

The mission work of GKI is done through, among others, education systems, community health care, orphanage, elderly housings, funeral services and publishing. Concerning GKI's involvement in education, it has now two universities in Jakarta and Bandung (West Java), one big school system (with 118 schools) in Jakarta, Banten and West Java, and many local church schools. Besides, there are church members who have participated in various school systems and Christian universities in Central Java and East Java. In the community health care, many congregations have their own health clinics serving the people in the surroundings.
