Bringing Reformed Church Leaders Together

Reformed Church in Mozambique
IGREJA REFORMADA EM MOCAMBIQUE (Portuguese)

The Reformed Church in Mozambique was founded in 1908, under the Dutch Reformed Church Mission by missionary A.G. Murray. He started this work from the Mlanda Mission in Malawi, on the border of Mozambique. In 1922 this church was closed by the Mozambique-Portuguese Roman Catholic government. In 1977 they became an independent Synod, bearing the name "Mphatso Synod." At that time there were no pastors, only church elders. In 1985-91 the church went into exile in Malawi because of the civil war, and in 1992 the church came back from exile and had its first Synod meeting within Mozambique. In 1994 they opened their own Theological School in Mozambique

RC Mozambique subscribes to the Belgic Confession, the Apostolic Creed, the Canons of Dort, and the Heidelberg Catechism.

At present the Lord is blessing His church in Mozambique. The work is growing so fast, and there is freedom of worship. There are two more new synods which were born from Mphatso Synod, making the total of three synods of the Reformed Church in Mozambique, bearing the following names:

I R M - MPHATSO SYNOD, operating in the central part of Mozambique. There are about 60,000 members and 75,000 Sunday school children, 25 pastors of which 5 are serving in administrative positions, three evanglists, 27 congregations, 285 prayer houses/preaching centers and five presbyteries. There are several departments running in this synod: Health and HIV Prevention, Relief and Development/Agriculture, TEE, Community oprphan care and Diaconal services, building and Carpentry, Youth and Children. The contact person for all of these is Rev. Samuel Bessitala, address below.

MAPUTO (new Synod), operating in the southern part of the country. There are about 12 pastors, and the membership of the church is still small (about 4000)

THUMBINE SYNOD, operating in the northern part of the country. There are 17 pastors and 3 evangelists serving in 26 congregations with more than of 25,000 members and 4 presbyteries in this synod.

These synods are discussing forming a General Synod in the near future.

Since the civil war this church is trying to reorganize and start again their missionary witness. At present, the church is training church elders and sending them out to evangelize (teach) in new mission areas, and afterward pastors go for follow-up.

The official address of the church is: Reformed Church in Mozambique, C.P. 3, Vila Ulongue, Angonia-Tete, Mozambique.
