The Dutch Reformed Church in Africa (DRCA) was founded in 1963 from a
merger of four regional synods then known as the Orange Free State, Transvaal,
Kaapland and Natal, each dating back to the 19th century. Near the end of the
apartheid era in South Africa, the DRCA began union negotiations with the Dutch
Reformed Mission Church. The union was formalized in 1994, but for theological
and procedural reasons, a large group of congregations decided to withdraw from
the union. They fought for and won the right to regard themselves as the
continuation of the DRCA.
The church has a General Synod and two regional synods. They have144
congregations with a membership of 111,980. These congregations are served by 63
ministers and 24 evangelists.
They have adopted the Nicene Creed, Athanasian Creed, Apostles Creed, Belgic
Confession, Heidelberg Cathechism, Canons of Dort and the Belhar Confession as
their doctrinal standards.
The General Synod has no special programs. The work is done by the regional
Synods. At the moment the regional synod of the Free State together with the DRC
in the Free State is doing mission work in Lesotho. There are already eight
congregations in Lesotho. The youth ministry is done in each congregation, but
the commissions for the youth in each regional synod is planning the work.
The regional synod of the Free State is also busy with a project in the
township of Botshabelo, to develop the people of that township.
